Trifecta is a high quality ready prepared meal service which promotes ‘Real Food. Real Results.’ They have significant variety in their food and you can choose from one of four different approaches to eating: Clean Meals (whole grains, lean proteins), Paleo Whole30 (free-range proteins and excludes processed carbohydrates), Keto (extreme low carb, proteins with higher fat content), or Plant Based (vegetarian and vegan-friendly meals).
Trifecta uses a subscription model with meals delivered each week with about a week delay from the time you place/choose your meal to the actual delivery. They deliver to all 50 US states and the delivery charge is $10. The deliver date depends on location–DC area is either a Friday or Saturday. Unless you opt for breakfasts, the minimum number of entrées they ship is 7, the maximum is 14. If you opt for breakfasts the minimum is 5 entrées and 5 breakfasts. They will ship you the chef’s choice of meals from whatever approach you have adopted (Clean, Keto, etc.) but you can go in a modify to select individual meals or change your approach. They have some ‘gourmet’ meal options which have premium proteins for an extra charge of $3-$4/meal. It is relatively easy to skip a week of meals and you can skip up to 4 weeks in advance. To cancel a subscription you need to call them during business hours.
A bonus with Trifecta is that they do offer an app which allows you to manage your account but also has claims to have trained dietitians which help you establish a macro based approach to your diet, then you can track your macros, activities and workouts and results right in this app. Trifecta also sponsors an 90-day challenge through the app at the beginning of the year with a chance to win a year of free food. The downside is that after the 7 day trial period the app costs between $13 and $20/month.
Like most ready-made meal companies, there is an initial discount on sign-up which can be as much as 50% off. After that, count on just under $16/entrée and $13/breakfast, plus applicable taxes and shipping. The Plant Based plan is slightly cheaper at $15/entrée.
To provide a meaningful comparison between the different plans (and other meal services) I look at four key objective factors that help me meet my health goals in the most cost effective way possible: 1) cost per 100 grams of protein, 2) calories per 100 grams of protein, 3) average serving size (grams), and 4) cost per 10 grams of fiber. For Trifecta the calculated figures based on nutrition labels are presented in the table below.
| Cost/100g Protein | Calories/100g Protein | Serving Size(g) | Cost/10g Fiber | |
| Clean | $54.18 | 1552 | 385 | $22.45 |
| Paleo Whole30 | $52.38 | 1467 | 400 | $22.45 |
| Keto | $41.35 | 1289 | 290 | $31.43 |
| Plant Based | $66.62 | 2048 | 370 | $10.76 |
Trifecta would likely be better suited for a ‘build’ mode as opposed to a ‘cut’ unless you were using just one meal a day and focusing the rest of your nutrition on very lean proteins. Good fiber content for Trifecta, especially on the Plant-Based menu.
We tried the Keto menu. The meals come in packaging that can be microwaved but they suggest that heat them in an air-fryer or skillet for maximum flavor– we opted for the skillet and it felt like a real meal with the veggies retaining their crispness. Good flavor and I didn’t need to season it — not even salt and pepper. It was more fat content than I was used to as the chicken is usually thigh meat and there is a lot of ground beef, chicken turkey as well as cheese in the Keto option.
The positives for Trifecta are the variety of meals, good fiber content and a well thought app although you do have to pay extra for that. This is also on of the few meal delivery services which offer a vegan alternative. While the cost per 100g of protein in terms of both calories and dollars is fairly high– it is still a much better alternative than even more ‘healthy’ take-out or fast-food options.
